RAMPANT BEES BRUSH HUDDERSFIELD ASIDE

The Bees produced one of their best performances of the season so far. The stall was set from the start. Huddersfield failed to collect the kick off and allowed it to run into touch. The lineout was stolen by the Bees and No 8 Liam Copping drove through some sloppy defending to score on 1 minute. On 14 mins that man Copping picked up at the back of a 5 meter scrum & strolled over for a 2nd 5 pointer. Both added to by kicker Joe Shaw. The Bees forwards were dominating proceedings led by powerhouse prop Tommy Ashdown & 2nd row Rob McKelvie both these players were causing chaos on and off the ball. Centre Ben Bottomley left the defence for dead on 22 minutes to dot down for the Bees 3rd try. Huddersfield never let their heads drop and battled gamely throughout. They were nearly rewarded with a score as their big No 12 broke through a tackle and was heading for the line, but Bees fullback Cal Gray put in a try saving tackle to sit the big man on his backside. The man Gray was on the end of a sweeping Bees move that saw a scissor move to the blindside and a inside pass to the flying fullback who dived over the line for the final score of the half. HT 26-0.

Bees who had dominated the 1st half made wholesale changes during the 2nd half which seemed to disrupt the flowing rugby shown in the 1st half. A turnover ball on Bees 10 meter line saw centre Ben Bottomley carve his way up the wing handing off 3 attempted tacklers. He was brought to ground on half way but popped the ball up to the supporting Bees No 10 Joe Shaw who out paced the Huddersfield defence & score under the posts. Bottomley himself added another score on 55 minutes to put the Bees 38-0 up. Huddersfield still stuck to their guns and were finally on the score sheet a minute later as a tackle out wide was missed and the Huddersfield player trotted in under the posts 38-7. Bees responded immediately and big No 8 Liam Copping claimed his hatrick of try's going over out wide after brushing off attempted tackles. 43-5. Huddersfield got the final points of a very entertaining game in the dying seconds to leave a final score of BEES 43 - Huddersfield 12. A nice touch to the game was to see Huddersfield sing "We wish you a Merry Christmas" to the Bees players as they walked through the tunnel, the Bees responding with "Jingle Bells".

BEES WIN WAR OF THE ROSES

Bees traveled over the hill to Lancashire to face a team that we have never played before at Littleborough. With a strong blustery wind blowing off the hillsides this was never going to be a spectacle of flowing rugby. Kick off was delayed as the Bees players arrived in dribs and drabs. With the wind blowing into the Bees faces the game started. Littleboroughs pack seemed fired up from the start and there was niggles from the first contact. It was no surprise when the Bees went behind on 4 mins as the team still seemed half asleep. 5-0 Mistakes by both teams were abundant, every scrum seemed to cause more niggles and words between the battling packs. Man mountain Rob McKelvie came into his own at this point bashing down the opposition with attack after attack. The Bees seemed to have finally woken up and took control of the game. On 20 mins after a  quickly hooked scrum, the ball was passed down the line for speedy centre Ben Bottomley to cross the whitewash out wide. 5-5. It only took the Bees a further 3 minutes to score the second try. After good rucking by the Bees pack, the ball was fired out to wingman James Tomlinson who outpaced his opposite number and dab down under the sticks for a five pointer. The extra 2 added by Bees Captain Joe Shaw. 5-12 Outside centre Matty Dawkins ran in the next score going over in the corner on 27 minutes 5-17. Things got a little nasty as Littleborough couldn't seem to live with the Bees pace & power. Bees Rob McKelvie received a yellow card as he handed off a Littleborough player, this was extremely unfair as it was a David v Goliath match up which the Bees man was never going to lose. But the Littleborough parents seemed to influence the inexperienced 18 year old referee with their rantings & ravings. HT 5-17

With the wind changing direction and the temperature dropping the 2nd half began with both sets of backs looking frozen, as all the play seemed to be locked with the forwards. The 52nd minute saw Littleborough score after some poor tackling from the frozen fingered backs 10-17 To keep the backs warm Bees rotated players from the bench at every opportunity. A 56th minute score by James Tomlinson saw the final points of the game. FT 10-24

'BEES STORM CASTLE' - DONCASTER 22 - BEES 33

The Scene: The Bees arrived at Castle Park (Doncasters home) a fantastic setup for a National 1 team, on a perfect day for hopefully some champagne rugby. The kick off was delayed some 15 mins. Was it the mass support trying to find space! No, half the Bees team decided to go on a site seeing trip of the beautiful Donny town Centre, having become detached from the team convoy on the way down. Coach Andy Todd, sounding like Sir Clive, but looking like Brian Glover (of Kes fame)!!  briefed the boys, "You are playing on their midden" blank faces stared back, "What's a midden" 1 lad muttered. With quite a few players crossing off on sunday morning, coach Todd had to do more shuffling than Paul Daniels. With a flanker on the wing, Centre at fullback & a few 1st timers spread through the team, it seemed like it could be a long afternoon.

Act One: With Doncaster having a squad high into the 20's in numbers, it was decided to play three, 20 minute halves. Bees took to the game like they meant business, on 3 mins Liam Copping picked up from the back of a 5 meter scrum to score on the blind in the corner, Joe Shaw kicked well from the touchline to add the extra 2. Doncaster replied on 8 minutes with a try of their own, as the Bees defence seemed to show no interest in tackling Doncasters No 12. Kick missed, Doncaster struck again on 10 minutes, with a powerful drive from 10 meters for a touchdown under the posts, leaving a easy kick for the extra 2 points. The Bees struck back on 14 minutes, again Liam Copping from short, went over unopposed. Joe Shaw adding once more. Again Doncaster pushed forward and took the lead on 18 mins. Both teams were playing the Champagne attacking rugby, but the defence was more like a flat pint of Tetleys. Doncaster 17 - Bees 14

Act Two: Bees started the next episode very much like the 1st, from a high restart, miss fielded the Bees fired the ball out through the backs, only for the man in the middle to call play back for the original knock on. The Bees formed for the scrum moaning & groaning. From the scrum, a miss pass went into the hands of fullback James Tomlinson who drove over out wide for the Bees to regain the lead. It took Doncaster 7 minutes more to regain the lead themselves as they crossed the whitewash out wide. 22-19. This looked like a game that could finish 49-49. But once more attack beat defence. For the 3rd time in the match Bees No8 Liam Copping picked up at the back of the scrum, scattered the Doncaster defence to claim his hatrick. Converted by Joe Shaw. What next? Doncaster 22 - Bees 26

Act Three: Would this change of lead carry on in the final half. No is the answer. The Bees finally took a bit of control of the game and spent long periods of the half pinning Doncaster back in their own half. In defence, the Bees finally understood that they should secure the ball in their own 22 meters & not carry out the single handed crazy runs away from the other forwards which had been seen so many times in the other halves. Everytime that Doncaster got in to the Bees final 20 they were turned around with some massive defensive kicks. One 40 meter spiralling kick cleared the Castle Park boundary fence and landed in the adjacent Travellers site. A Doncaster parent commenting " That will be melted down and be on a Transit wheel, by Monday". The final score of the game, saw Bees stand off Joe Shaw collect a defencive kick on the half way, coach Todd was calling for the ball to be kicked in to the corner, but the No 10 had other ideas. Running back at the defence, with 2 side steps, Shaw cut through the home ranks to score to the right of the posts, calmly got up and added the conversion to put the game beyond Doncaster. That was the final meaningful action in a very entertaining game. Doncaster 22 - Bees 33

Epilogue: On leaving the field coach Todd spoke to powerful prop Tommy Ashdown, "Why did you pass that ball & not just set it up in our 22" the reply being " I didn't know he was gonna drop it". Thought of the day. Never work with children or animals!.

BEES BOOT POCKLINGTON OUT OF YORKSHIRE CUP

With 2 minutes of the game remaining & the scores level, Bees Captain Joe Shaw kicks 35 meter penalty to boot Pocklington out of the cup.

The good side of the Bees U15s was shown today. after some pre match off the field problems, the Bee showed what a good side they can be against a good Pocklington side. The Bees bossed the first 18 minutes with Pocklington not really able to put any phases of play together & it was no surprise when 2nd row Liam copping broke from a maul on Pocklingtons 22 to score under the posts the extras added by Joe Shaw. The Bees were on the rampage and 5 minutes later Liam Copping again crossed the white wash to put the Bees further ahead, again the trusty boot of Joe Shaw added another 2 points. Pocklington fought back valiantly and were rewarded when from a quickly taken penalty, the ball traveled down the back line for the winger to score in the corner.

Half time Bees 14 Pocklington 5.

The second half saw the Bees take control once again & on 45 minutes a training field move saw inside centre Ben Bottomley cut back to the blindside of a scrum, & scoot over for a superb 5 pointer. Pocklington should have been dead and buried by now but raised their game and were back on the score sheet after some sloppy defending by the Bees left a gaping hole for pocklington to breeze through to the line & score under the posts, worse was to come, as in the next attack a high kick in to a Strong breeze was allowed to bounce & Pocklington unopposed collected the kick and went over the Bees line. With both try's converted this left the score at 19-19 with 4 minutes to play. With the cup rules as they are, the away team go through in  the event of a drawn game. Bees were looking defeat in the eye, but further drama was to unfold. From the restart the ball held up in the wind and from a resulting maul a Pocklington player used hands on the floor & a penalty was awarded to Bees. Half the players were calling for the ball to be kicked to the corner, but Captain Joe Shaw calmly picked up the ball & hit the perfect kick against a gale force wind to see Bees through to the next round.

Full time Bees 22 Pocklington 19.

Hookerless Bees stung at the'Gate'

Bees took on this fixture as a warm up for next weeks Cup game against Pocklington knowing they would be in for another tough encounter. But due to school holidays, both the Bees hookers were still away. This meant a real shake up in the pack with influential prop Conner Wood filling the vacant berth.

I think the clocks changing took its toll on the Bees forwards as they were 2nd best in all aspects against a well drilled & organised Harrogate pack. The Bees forwards seemed to be happy to just amble about the field & it was no surprise when Harrogate took the lead with a strong run down the left wing leaving the Bees looking like a tag rugby team, to dot down in the corner. The next score came on 18 mins, the Bees driving the ball forward just outside our 22 meter line, only to lose the ball to leave a easy stroll to the line by Harrogates Scrum half unopposed. Further misery came as the bees pack failed to tidy out in a rook in front of the posts, allowing Gate's No 6 to pick up, power through once again non effective forwards to score under the posts. Both the last 2 trys converted to see Harrogate 17-0 up at the break.

Stern words by coaches Todd & Wood seemed to have effect & the Bees started to dominate the early part of the 2nd half. They were rewarded for their efforts when  5 mins in to the half a quickly recycled ball was passed out to centre Ben Bottomley who strongly handed off 2 Harrogate defenders & crossed the white wash for Bees first points. Joe Shaw's accurate kick adding the extra points. Bees puffed and panted for a further 10 mins without reward. On 50 mins a Bees scrum 10 meters out was taken against the head & the Harrogate back row combined to pick up and drive and touch down for another 5 pointer. Harrogate's pack again took charge & a final score on 79 mins showed the difference between the 2 teams. Final score Harrogate 29 - Bees 7

Will it be the Jekyll or the Hyde team that turns up this week in the cup. Who knows!!. Watch this space.

BEES SAIL THROUGH TO ROUND 2 OF YORKSHIRE CUP

Bees got back on track in the 1st round of the Yorkshire Cup with the game all over by half time.

From the start the Bees showed their intent. From the Selby kick off the ball was fielded by Bees No 8 Liam Copping the ball went down the line & inside centre Ben Bottomley out paced the Selby defence to open the scoring with a mere 25 seconds gone, Captain Joe Shaw adding the extras from out wide. Following some resolute defending from the Selby pack for the next 10 minutes the Bees next score was a penalty on the 22 in the 12th minute again added to by Joe Shaw. A strong run by winger James Tomlinson on 15 minutes saw the next Bees score with the 2 extra points again added. From the restart centre Ben Bottomley again outpaced a static defence to see the Bees race to a 22-0 lead. 25th minute & scrum half Callum Radcliffe powered over from 5 meters to add to Selbys misery. Again Joe Shaw was accurate with the kick. The last minute of the half saw a flowing move down the right, the ball passing through 8 pairs of hands before No 8 Liam Copping strolled in under the posts for Bees 5th Try. The extras added, Bees finished the half with a 36-0 lead.

With the rules in the cup being as they are, it meant a further score in the second half would mean that the game was in effect over. This was not long in coming when Callum Radcliffe barged over with the full weight of the Bees pack driving him on in the 46th minute. Prop Tommy Ashdown decided to try out his goal kicking prowess, to add the extras from what must have been in a props world, some 45 meters !!!. The game was over as a spectacle & with the Bees changing most of the team round, one further score was added when skipper Joe Shaw kicked the ball high ahead, caught his own kick to touch down under the posts for a final Bees try. The extras added by would be replacement scrum half James Brown. All credit though goes to a solid Selby team for their complete effort & determination against a team who have been together for quite a while. It was a pleasure to see that even though been soundly beaten, they never gave up & was deservedly rewarded with a superb drop goal in the last 15 seconds of the game. Final score Selby 3 - Bees 50.

The Bees team & management were pleased with the way the team went about their business, the only sad face was that of coach Paul Wood when having to part with £25.00.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES

Bees went in to the game against Old Brods knowing they would have to up their game against a side who are probably the best team in the county. From the outset the Bees put pressure on the opposition & spent the first 10 minutes of the game camped in the Brods half. Wave after wave of Bees attacks were repelled by a strong defence. The only reward from the Bees attacks was 3 points from a drop goal by Bees Captain Joe Shaw. Old Brods now turned up the pressure and it was the Bees defence which had to be at their best. Brods pressure finally told with seconds of the half remaining when the Bees defence was driven back over their own line, the ball spilled out & Brods touched down for a 5 pointer. Half time 3-5

Whatever was said to the Brods team at half time really did work & straight from the restart a hanging kick was not dealt with & Brods No 7 took the ball at full pace drove through two half hearted tackles to go over in the corner, the extras added with a fine kick out wide. The Bees tried to regroup but Brods had raised their game & Bees struggled to repel wave after wave of attacks. Brods then hit a purple patch and hit the Bees with 4 trys in 8 minutes to leave the Bees in their wake.. Two of the four conversions were successful to leave a final score of Bees 3 - Brods 36

BEES ROUT, CURTAILED BY REFEREE

A total humiliation of the Baildon team was avoided by some interesting decisions by the merry whistle blower.

From the outset the Bees showed their intentions, with prop Conner Wood storming over in the 2nd minute to be the start of a purple 10 minutes for the Bees. A 4th minute try from winger James Tomlinson (JT) added misery to the Baildon side. A further 7th minute try by Tomlinson showed the huge chasm between the sides. Joe Shaw added 2 out of three conversions. A 12th minute try from No 8 Liam Copping added further woe, with Callum Gray adding the extras. New addition to this seasons squad 2nd Row Joel Scott in the 17th minute seemed to put a cricket score on the cards, but from then on the man in the middle awarded 15 penalties against the Bees, which bemused both players & coaches. From one such penalty on 22 mins a quick tap from 5 meters saw Baildon go over the whitewash to leave a half time score of 31-7

The second half started as the 1st did, with the Bees powering forward. From a scrum 5 meters out on 38 mins saw Calum(Burgler) Radcliffe showed reminiscence of former scrum half dad, Derek, to touch down for a 5 pointer, added to by Joe Shaw. Replacement Ben Rose (The only paperboy in Bingley to do the job in a Mercedes) showed he has more tricks up his sleeve than his long armed dad Mark, chipped ahead to cause disarray in the Baildon defence, and a fly hack from the defence fell straight into the arms of Bees centre Ben Bottomley who strolled over for another 5 pointer, again added to by Joe Shaw. Once more the man in green got giddy & a further 10 penalties against the Bees stopped the momentum. Baildon dug in and replied with try's on 45 & 56 mins. A 57th minute penalty awarded to the Bees was the most cheered moment from the Bees supporters.  After breaking through and dropping the ball over the line on 58 minutes (I said I wouldn't mention it Liam, but I lied), No 8 Liam Copping again broke through on 60 mins to seal a well earned victory for the Bees. Bees replacement Toby Tranter stepped up for the conversion & showed by he should stick to playing tidily winks.

Final score Bees 50 Baildon 19   (Penalty count 27 - 1)

RUSTY BEES PROVE TOO POWERFUL FOR MOORTOWN   Sunday 17/9

BEES 38 - MOORTOWN 31

The Bees opened their 1st game of the season on fire. The forwards dominated the early exchanges & Moortown just could not live with the pace of the Bees backs. A sweeping move through the hands on 5 mins saw Matty Dawkins outstrip the Moortown defence for a superb opener, converted by Joe Shaw. Another terrific break saw the Moortown backs at sixes & sevens saw Scrum half Calum Radcliffe in support to dot down in the corner. The Bees backs were now rampant and a hack through by Joe Shaw saw him follow up his kick to score another 5 pointer on 20 mins. The game looked to be well one but Moortown had other ideas & a break in the Bees 22 saw Moortown open their account on 24 mins. This  sent alarm bells ringing in the Bees ranks & after conceding far too many needless penalties, the Bees were punished again as a quickly taken penalty 8 meters out let the Moortown number 8 score unopposed. The extra 2 points were added leaving a half time score of 19-12.

Five minutes after the restart the Bees still showing unrest & needless niggle let the Moortown winger breeze past for a converted try to level up at 19-19. Coach Paul Wood had Stern words & this seemed to lift the Bees. Straight from the restart a high hanging kick was not taken, the Bees recycled the ball & centre Ben Bottomley left the Moortown team for dead as he put on the after burners & score under the posts. The extras added by Joe Shaw. 10 mins of forceful play by both sets of forwards saw the next try, when a 10 meter scrum in front of the posts saw Bees no 8 Liam Copping pick up at the back of the scrum & score to the left of the uprights, again the extras were added by Joe Shaw. (54 mins) The Bees seemed to have raised their game & next on 65 mins wingman Ross McUrich latched onto the ball on the Moortown 22 & outpace the defence to score in the corner, Joe Shaw adding the extra 2 points. Game over, or was it!!!. Moortown regrouped & too their credit threw everything at the Bees, tempers were getting frayed, but Moortown stuck to the task & another quick tap from a Bees infringement saw Moortown score on 75 mins the kick been converted saw Moortown back in it. Discord & tiredness seemed to be rife in the Bees ranks & Moortown took full advantage to score a final try on the 80th minute The score was unconverted to leave the final score as 38-31.
